Magic 8 Ball

Most Magic 8 Balls online give you the same twenty lines and nothing else. This one lets you swap the whole deck. Pick a themed pack, or write your own answers, and the ball reads from your list instead of the factory script. It loads the moment you open it, works fine on a phone, and keeps everything in your browser, so nothing you type gets uploaded.

The classic toy is a fixed object. You shake it, you get one of twenty printed replies, and that's the whole range for the rest of its life, which is fun for a while but wears thin. So the deck is the real upgrade here, and it puts you in charge of what the ball can say. Want an oracle that only says encouraging things before a big day? Load the Motivational pack. Want one that roasts you? There's a Sarcastic deck for that. Running a stream or a classroom and you need answers your audience will actually laugh at? Type them in, one per line, and you've got a custom 8 Ball nobody else has.

And because the deck rides along in the share link, you can send your exact oracle to a friend. They open the link, and the ball already knows your answers. No sign-up, no pasting a list around, it just shows up loaded.

1. Type your question in the box. A yes or no question fits best, something like "Should I text them back tonight?" You can also skip the box and hold the question in your head.
2. Pick a deck or leave it on Classic. The buttons swap the answer pool in one tap: Classic, Decide, Sarcastic, Motivational, or Chaos.
3. Shake by pressing the button or hitting Enter. The ball pops, and an answer surfaces in the window.
4. Shake again for another draw from the same deck, or Reset to clear the question and start over.
5. Make it yours. Hit Customize answers, then edit the list in the box, one answer per line. Delete the ones you don't like, add your own, or paste a whole list you already wrote.
6. Share it. Use the Share button to copy a link that carries your deck. Send it, and whoever opens it gets your custom ball, ready to shake.

Your custom deck is saved on your own device, so it's still there next time you come back. Drop back to the original set anytime with Reset to classic.

Classic is the authentic set, all twenty printed replies, kept word for word. Decide trims things down to an even split of yes, no, and maybe, for when you actually want the ball to settle something instead of clowning around. Sarcastic answers with attitude ("Bold of you to ask"). Motivational only ever nudges you forward ("Take the leap," "You've got this"). And Chaos leans unhinged, the one to pull up at a party ("Consult a cat," "The universe is buffering").

The real feature is the editor. Open Customize answers and you get a plain text box, one answer per line. Whatever sits in that box is what the ball draws from, so a five-line list gives you a five-answer ball and a forty-line list gives you forty. This is where it stops being a novelty and turns into something actually yours. A few things people build:

• Inside jokes for a group chat, so the ball answers in your friends' voices.
• A chores ball for the kids, where every answer is a task.
• Truth-or-dare prompts for a game night.
• Streamer replies branded to a channel, so chat can spam the link.

Because the odds are just "one line picked at random," you control the mood by how you weight the list. A list of mostly yes answers makes the ball feel cheerful, and the mood turns harsher the more no answers you add. That is the kind of control the plastic toy never gave you.

The original has exactly twenty answers, split ten yes, five maybe, five no, which is not an even balance. A positive reply is about twice as likely as a negative one, and roughly half of all shakes land on some flavor of yes. The toy was built to entertain, and a ball that mostly said no wouldn't be much fun to keep on a desk. We kept that tilt in the Classic deck on purpose, so it feels as encouraging as the real thing.

Worth knowing if you switch decks, the Decide pack is balanced instead, so it won't quietly steer you toward yes. Reach for Classic when you want the nostalgic optimism. The Decide deck gives you even odds when you'd rather it not lean either way.

There's a genuinely useful move hiding inside a toy this silly. The second an answer lands, you feel something about it. Ask whether you should do the thing, and if the ball says no and your stomach drops, you already wanted a yes. If it says yes and you feel relief, that's your answer, and the ball was only the excuse to notice it. The random draw forces a reaction out of you, and that reaction is what actually tells you something. So the ball is not really predicting anything, it is just surfacing a gut feeling you already had.

Keep it to the small, reversible stuff, though. Takeout, movie picks, who goes first. Anything touching your health, your money, or the people you care about deserves real thought, not a random draw.
