First, a quick reality check. This is astrology and folklore rather than science. Your sign cannot predict your week or explain your personality with any real accuracy. Treat it like a horoscope in a magazine, a fun lens and a good conversation starter. It is genuinely fun to play with, as long as you do not run your life by it.

Your sun sign

The sun sign is the one people mean when they say "I'm a Leo." It is the sign the Sun was passing through on the day you were born, and it comes down to your month and day, never the year. There are twelve signs, each covering about thirty days. Born March 25 and you are an Aries, July 15 a Cancer, December 25 a Capricorn. Every sign carries an element (fire, earth, air, or water) and a ruling planet, and the trait sketch below the card gives you the broad-strokes personality tradition ties to it.

The elements rotate around the wheel in the same order, fire then earth then air then water. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) read as bold and energetic, earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) as grounded, air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) as thinkers and talkers, and water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) as emotional and intuitive. It is why someone might say "we are both water signs, no wonder we get each other."

Your birthstone and birth flower

Both come straight from your birth month, so you get them even without a year. The stones follow the modern American list, the one most US jewelers use and most people grew up seeing on charm bracelets. April is diamond, July is ruby, September is sapphire, and so on. A few months carry a second common stone, and the card names it when there is one, so June shows pearl with alexandrite and moonstone as alternates.

The birth flower is the older tradition, and it is charming for a card or a gift. June is the rose, October is the marigold, December is the narcissus. These vary a little between the British and American lists, so the tool gives the common version plus a well-known alternate where one exists.

Your Chinese zodiac (and the New Year catch)

Enter your year and the tool works out your Chinese zodiac animal and its element. There are twelve animals on a repeating cycle, from Rat to Pig, and five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) that pair with them, so a full round is sixty years. 2020 was the Metal Rat, 2024 was the Wood Dragon.

Here is where most free tools get it wrong, and it is the reason ours checks your month and day too. The Chinese zodiac year does not begin on January 1. It begins on Chinese New Year, which lands somewhere between late January and mid February. So if you were born on, say, January 30, your animal depends on whether that date came before or after the New Year that year. A lot of calculators ignore this and just read your calendar year, which quietly gives early-year babies the wrong animal. This tool knows the actual New Year date for a wide span of years and places your birthday on the correct side of the line. When it cannot pin the exact date, it tells you plainly and names the animal you would have if you were born before the New Year.

Fire and water, or air and earth, get a "takes some work" note, because the two move at different speeds. And two signs straight across the wheel, like Aries and Libra, get the old opposites-attract verdict.

None of it is a verdict on a real relationship, obviously. Two people are far more than a fire sign and an earth sign, they are whole people. Take it as a fun prompt, the kind of thing you screenshot and send with a laughing face.

Your sun sign is one piece of a bigger chart. Your moon sign is where the Moon sat at your birth, tied to your inner emotional world, and it needs your exact date since the Moon changes signs every couple of days. Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign climbing over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born, linked to first impressions. It needs your birth time and city, not just the date. If your sun sign never quite fits you, this is usually why. A Capricorn sun with a Leo moon and a Gemini rising is a different creature than a plain Capricorn.
