Area Converter
Convert between square meters, square feet, acres, hectares, square miles, and more instantly.
About the Area Converter
The Area Converter turns any area measurement into another unit instantly — square millimeters, square centimeters, square meters, square kilometers, hectares, square inches, square feet, square yards, acres, and square miles. Type a number, pick the unit you have and the unit you want, and the answer appears immediately. All the math runs in your browser, so it's instant and works offline once the page has loaded.
Area conversions come up constantly: sizing a room or a rug, buying flooring or paint, reading a real-estate listing written in a different system, planning a garden or a field, or working through homework and lab reports. Land is often measured in acres or hectares while building materials come in square feet or square meters, so mixing systems is unavoidable. This tool removes the guesswork and the error-prone squaring that trips people up when they try to convert area by hand.
How to use
- Enter a value in the "From" box.
- Choose the unit you're converting from in the first dropdown.
- Choose the unit you want in the second dropdown — the result updates as you type.
- Use the ⇄ swap button to reverse the direction (for example, switch from "square meters → square feet" to "square feet → square meters") without re-entering anything.
All conversions use exact, internationally standardized factors — for instance, 1 square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m² and 1 acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 m² — so the results are accurate for construction, surveying, schoolwork, and everyday use alike. Results are shown with enough significant figures to stay precise without cluttering the display.

Frequently asked questions
How accurate are the conversions?
Very accurate. Every unit is defined relative to the square meter using its exact international factor, so conversions are correct to eight significant figures — more than enough for building, surveying, and school. The only rounding is in how the result is displayed, and you can round further to whatever precision your task needs.
Does this work without an internet connection?
Once the page has loaded, yes. All the calculations happen locally in your browser with no server involved, so conversions keep working even if you go offline.
What is the difference between an acre and a hectare?
Both measure land area, but they come from different systems. A hectare is metric and equals exactly 10,000 square meters (a square 100 m on a side). An acre is an imperial/US unit equal to about 4,046.86 square meters, so one hectare is roughly 2.47 acres. Farmland and property are commonly quoted in acres in the US and UK and in hectares across most of the rest of the world.
Why can't I just convert area the same way I convert length?
Because area is two-dimensional. If a length factor doubles, the area factor is squared. For example, 1 foot is 0.3048 meters, but 1 square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 square meters. This converter already accounts for the squaring, so you don't have to.
Can I convert very large or very small numbers?
Yes. The converter handles everything from a fraction of a square millimeter to thousands of square kilometers. Extremely large or small results are shown in scientific notation so they stay readable and precise.
Which units does it support?
Square millimeters, square centimeters, square meters, square kilometers, hectares, square inches, square feet, square yards, acres, and square miles — covering both the metric and imperial/US systems and the most common everyday, land, and technical area measurements.
